The concept of hiyyuv—religious obligation—has often created stark divisions, between Jews and non-Jews, religious and secular, Jews of different genders. Delving into texts from the Talmud to the twentieth century writings of Rav Yitzhak Hutner and feminist sociology alike, we will take a stance that is at once theological and ethnographic to probe how hiyyuv interfaces with our real experiences and live concerns.
