Believing What We Say

Four Models of Truthfulness in Prayer

Akiva Mattenson

Sometimes we articulate hopes in our prayers that are hard to believe. We pray for the resurrection of the dead or we bless God for caring compassionately for all living flesh. But these convictions and hopes can feel unsustainable in the face of doubts and countervailing realities. How important is truthfulness in prayer? And what can we do when sincerity is difficult? Together, we will locate and explore four models that emerge from the teachings of our core texts and their interpreters.
