Overview

Join us for an in-depth exploration of the halakhic laws of Birkhot ha-Shahar, the morning blessings. We'll dive into advanced-level study from the Tur and Beit Yosef and examine the historical evolution of these berakhot over time. Throughout our learning, we'll ponder intriguing questions such as how the blessings of identity in Birkhot ha-Shahar respond to shifts in society, the extent to which these blessings are meant to respond to human experience rather than structuring our day, and what roles creativity and standardization play in our liturgy.

Learning Mode: This class is designed for students who are comfortable working through Hebrew at the Intermediate level with a havruta, dictionaries, and faculty assistance. Translations will not be made available, and students should be excited to work through the text independently or with a havruta for a significant amount of time.
