The Danger of Hope with Rabbi Avi Strausberg
Hope is the foundation of resilience. It allows for the ability to envision a better world even in the midst of despair. And, yet the Talmud teaches us that hope can lead to heartache and set us up for great disappointment. This year's Dr. Eddie Scharfman Memorial Lecture, "The Danger of Hope" with Rabbi Avi Strausberg, explored texts of Talmud and modern poetry as well as the writings of the Rabbi Kalonymus Kalman Shapira for wisdom on how to live with hope without getting our hearts broken. Together we considered whether it is better to hope for a salvation that might never come or to accept the reality of a broken world.
